DESCRIPTION:
Our Spring 2025 Recycling Event will be held on Saturday\, M
arch 29th. We have a new location – the parking lots at the Height
s Church\, 201 W. Renner Road (SW corner of Renner Rd. and Centra
l Expressway).
\n
The Spring Electronics Recycling and Paper
Shredding Event is our largest fundraiser.
\n
The RCPAAA wor
ks hard to keep this event free to the public\, but it is also expensive t
o produce. The cost to provide the shredding trucks is around $4000. You c
an help offset these expenses by donating to our Back The Blue fund\, which will allow us to continue supporti
ng the men and women of the Richardson Police Department.
\n
The <str
ong>Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding Event begins at 10:
00 am and closes at 2:00 pm.
\n
All types of electronics will be acce
pted EXCEPT old style CRT monitors and televisions.
\n
Paper shreddin
g is primarily for residents of North Texas and is free. There is a 5 box
limit for free shredding. We ask that you donate $5/box over the five boxe
s for free limit. A box is understood to mean a standard “banker’s box” wh
ich is normally about 10x12x16.
\n
This event is held in conjunction
with the City of Richardson’s Trash Bash.
\n
This event is our major
fundraiser for the year. While the event is free\, donations will be solic
ited to help us support the Richardson Police Department. (RPD).
\n
T
he RCPAAA pays for the shredding trucks and the cost to provide those truc
ks increased dramatically for 2021. As a result\, we may not be able to pr
ovide as many trucks as before. Once the trucks are full\, we can no longe
r shred paper. We encourage everyone to arrive earlier rather than wait un
til the end to drop off their documents for shredding.
\n
The RCPAAA
is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports the RPD. We provide m
eals on special occasions and “goody bags” for those officers and employee
s who work during the holidays. Scholarships are awarded to children of RP
D employees who are entering college. We also provide help covering medica
l expenses for retired RPD K9s.
\n

DESCRIPTION:
Each year\, the second full week of April is dedicate
d to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. It wa
s first conceived by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County (Calif.)
Sheriff’s Office in 1981 and was observed only at that agency for three y
ears. Members of the Virginia and North Carolina chapters of the Associati
on of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) became involved in the
mid-1980s. By the early 1990s\, the national APCO organization convinced
Congress of the need for a formal proclamation. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-M
ass.) introduced what became H.J. Res. 284 to create “National Public Safe
ty Telecommunicator Week.” According to the Congressional procedure\, it w
as presented twice more in 1993 and 1994 and then became permanent\, witho
ut the need for annual introduction.
\n
The 911 CARES project has a w
ide range of NTW logo products that are great for gifts—or just for yourse
lf! Moreover\, the project gives back to the dispatching community\, so th
ey are worthy of support. APCO has a blog to share NTW celebrations and ho
nors.
\n
The official name of the week when initially introduced in C
ongress in 1991 was “National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.” In th
e intervening years\, it has become known by several other names\, includi
ng “National Public-Safety Telecommunications Week” and “International Pub
lic Safety Telecommunicator’s Week.” The Congressional resolution also sta
ted there were more than “500\,000 telecommunications specialists\,” altho
ugh other estimates put the number of dispatchers at just over 200\,000. T
he Congressional figure may include support personnel and perhaps even tho
se in the commercial sector of public safety communications.
